Rock Books

Rock books were conceived both as a means to help student interns gain familiarity with various tools often used in my studio and as an introduction to using pre-published books (often referred to as altered, upscaled or repurposed books). The first phase involved book selection using criteria including value of book as individual object, availability of book's content and perceived ability of book to undergo rigorous abuse. Second phase involved cutting and shaping sections of the selected books with first a chop saw, then a scroll saw which were then further refined with both power and hand held sanders. Phase three involved painting the outer covers and page edges with acrylic, followed with a protective layer of wax. 5
